How to take a compass course

The compass is used when you need to go straight in a certain given direction.

  • The compass is placed on the map so that one edge of its long side lies both at the point on the map where you are and and also at the point you are going to. The compass' course arrow indicates the direction of travel.
  • Rotate the compass housing so that the parallel lines at the bottom of the compass housing coincide with the vertical coordinate lines of the map and the north arrow of the compass housing points toward the map north.
  • Lift the compass off the map and hold it horizontally in your hand. Turn the body until the north arrow of the compass housing and the north of the compass needle coincide while turning so that the red end of the compass needle hits the north fork. Now the compass' course arrow points out your direction of travel.
  • When you take a compass course, you should also follow the map so that the map image and the terrain correspond to each other.
